Mid-Year People Review: Is Your Team Set Up to Finish the Year Strong?

Day 30 of 31 Days of Better Workplaces — we’re in the final days of August, which means you’re well into the second half of the year. It’s the right time to take stock of where your people are at — not just the business results, but the people delivering them.

A mid-year people review doesn’t need to be formal or time-consuming. It’s a structured pause to assess where you are, what’s working, and what needs attention before the year ends.

Five questions to work through

1. Who is performing strongly, and do they know it?

Your high performers need to hear that they’re valued. If you haven’t had an explicit conversation with your best people about what you see in them and what the future looks like, now is the time. People who feel invisible leave.

2. Who is struggling, and what’s the plan?

Unaddressed performance concerns don’t resolve by the end of the year — they compound. If you’ve been watching a performance issue develop, the time to address it is now. A genuine conversation and a clear improvement plan in September is better than a crisis in December.

3. Do you have the right people in the right roles?

People change. Business needs change. A role that suited someone eighteen months ago might not be the right fit now — or might have evolved beyond what they currently have the capability to deliver. Is everyone well-positioned for what the business needs in the last quarter of 2026?

4. Is anyone a flight risk?

Who on your team, if they handed in their notice tomorrow, would hurt the most? What do you know about how they’re feeling about their work? When did you last have a direct, genuine conversation with them about how they’re going? If the answer to that last question is “a while ago,” fix it this week.

5. Are you set up to finish the year with the team you have?

If someone leaves in the next eight weeks, what’s the impact? Do you have the succession and coverage you need? If the answer is no, that’s a resourcing risk worth addressing now.
The answers to these questions don’t require a formal process. They require honest reflection and a few important conversations.
